Ukraine's military has fended off an attack by Russian-backed militants around Debaltseve in eastern Ukraine. The insurgents used tanks and artillery to attack the transport hub, as well as several smaller cities, in Donetsk region.
Russia-backed fighters also attacked Pisky, a village near the Donetsk International Airport.
The ‘DUK' company commander: "The Pisky attack was launched to distract attention from Debaltseve and I warned about it. It's a painful point."
Local residents fled their homes. Local authorities said some 200 leave Debaltseve daily.
