70% of Ukrainians will celebrate Christmas two times

About 70% of Ukrainians intend to celebrate Christmas on January 7, 2020, according to a nationwide survey conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Razumkov Center.
About 70% of Ukrainians intend to celebrate Christmas on January 7, 2020, according to a nationwide survey conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Razumkov Center.

The results of the survey were presented at a press conference at Ukrinform on Thursday, December 26.

"Most Ukrainians, as they did last year, intend to celebrate Christmas on January 7 next year - 67% (76% in 2017, 69% in 2018), whereas another 21% (17% in 2018) will celebrate [Christmas] twice - on December 25 and January 7, and only 4%, as last year, said that they would celebrate [Christmas] only on December 25, and 6% of Ukrainians said they would not celebrate Christmas at all (it was 8% in 2018)," the study reads.

At the same time, the overwhelming majority of respondents (86%) said they like the New Year holidays, 9% of Ukrainians treat them differently, and only 5% do not like them.

At the same time, 61% of Ukrainians told experts that in 2019, they were very or mostly happy, as last year.

"Most citizens have quite optimistic expectations of the next year: 21% believe that the year 2020 will definitely be better than the current year, another 61% expect it to be so, and 8% expect it not to be worse. Only 1% believe that the next year will be worse," the authors of the study said.

According to the poll, most Ukrainians (67%) will spend the New Year's Eve at home with their families, as opposed to only 1% planning to see in the New Year on an interesting trip or abroad.

At the same time, the average amount that Ukrainians are willing to spend on New Year's Eve dinner is 1,390 hryvnias, which is less than last year (1,752 hryvnias). At the same time, 23% of those polled said they had no money for New Year's Eve dinner.

As for gifts, as in 2018, most Ukrainians would like to be in good health (49%), get peace in the country (40%), family concord (9%), money (24%), a good job (16%), success of children (12%). In general, only 1% of respondents expect no New Year's gifts.

A nationwide survey was conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the sociological service of the Razumkov Center from December 13 to December 18, 2019 in all regions of Ukraine, except Crimea and the occupied territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The poll's margin of error does not exceed 2.3%.
