Dorohozychi metro station is proposed to be renamed "Babi Yar"
Holocaust Memorial Center "Babin Yar" initiates renaming of the Syretsko-Pechersk line of the Kyiv metro station "Dorogozhychi" to Babin Yar station, reports UNN with reference to the memorial center's press service.
“Such a proposal has already been addressed to the mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko. All expenses related to the renaming process will be funded by the Charity Fund. Such an initiative is due to the fact that the Dorogozhichi metro station is located directly in the historical territory of the Babin Yar tract, a memorial site where one of the greatest Holocaust tragedies took place in 1941-1943. Mass executions were carried out here, which, according to historians, killed about 100,000 people of different nationalities and faiths - Jews, Ukrainians, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, and patients of a psychiatric hospital, ”the statement said.
The center also added that: “Every year, tens of thousands of people, including from all over the world, visit this place. In addition, a memorial center will be built in the territory of Babi Yar in the future. Thus, renaming the metro station will make it easier for anyone looking to visit the site, learn more about the tragedy of Babi Yar, or honor the innocent killed, help uncover the uniqueness of the entire area and spread knowledge about the events that took place here. "
