Ukrainian president announces withdrawal of parliamentary immunity
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is confident that the people's deputies must abolish the parliamentary immunity. A respective draft law is ready for consideration and only requires support and determination of the deputies themselves, as stated by the president.
"Actively discussed cases, decisive anti-corruption efforts demonstrated by the Prosecutor General's Office and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau remind us of such an anachronism as parliamentary immunity. My respective draft amendments to the Constitution are ready for consideration. It requires political will from the people's deputies to equate themselves with the rights of the citizens of Ukraine once and forever. Just as we have lifted the immunity of judges," Poroshenko said in his speech in the Constitution Day, according to the presidential press service.
The president is hopeful that the people's deputies would endorse those amendments shortly. "Once again, I hope that the people's deputies will soon adopt the given decision, as probably all of them promised to abolish this immunity in their election campaigns," he said.
