Ukraine may cancel compulsory conscription
Defense Minister Andriy Zahorodniuk has stated that the conscription for compulsory military service should be canceled in Ukraine, according to the Defense Ministry’s website.
“The position of the state and my personal goal is to cancel the conscription. We are moving towards an army that will correspond to NATO standards, which will be professional, trained and well-equipped,” Zahorodniuk said in an interview with TSN.
At the same time, the defense minister noted that this would not happen quickly.
“It will not happen within a year. Each soldier must know his or her place and have a clear military career and protected rights so that we can compete in selecting people, compete for the best people in our army. And good equipment, of course, is part of our capabilities,” Zahorodniuk said.
