Russian nationals are fighting in east Ukraine but not on the frontline. Those were the words of Serhiy Galushko, from Ukraine's Defence Ministry, he made the comments on Ukrainian TV on the programme "pravo na vlady." He said Russians are fighting in a secondary capacity, behind local militants.
The Russians act as trainers, they're managing militant sub-divisions on a tactical level, they're maintaining comunications and helping with intelligence gathering. These are invdividuals serving in the Russian military.
Galushko said 6,000 regular Russian troops are in Ukraine. He produced documents which Ukrainian officials had confiscated from one man fighting for the so-called Donetsk People's Republic. Among the papers was an identity card from the Russian military which showed that the man was on active service.
