The Turkish Republic’s founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk proclaimed Republic Day as Turkey’s most important holiday

KYIV/Ukraine in Arabic/ Today, on October 29th, the Muslim country is marking the 91st anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey.

As usual, official celebrations are centered at the capital, Ankara, where the Republic was declared on Oct. 29, 1923. Turkish politicians attended the ceremony at Anitkabir, mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk who was the founder and the first president of the Republic.

The official program will continue with the military parade held in Atatürk Cultural Center.

President Erdogan will host the October 29 reception for the first time during his presidency term and greet prominent Turkish politicians, bureaucrats, artists, scientists, business figures as well as foreign diplomats.

Opposition parties are not likely to attend the ceremony or the reception as a sign of protesting the location of the event.

Official ceremonies will also be held in province and district centers, attended both by local politicians and bureaucrats. Vatan Avenue in Istanbul's Fatih district will be the location for official ceremony and military parade in Istanbul.

Marches and public concerts will also be held in several other cities, notably in İzmir, Antalya and Bursa and others.

Background

Republic Day is an official national holiday in Turkey. Public administration buildings, schools, post offices and many small businesses are usually closed on this day. Public transport schedules may vary. Public transport routes may change in the event of street performances and processions. The afternoon of the previous day, October 28, is also an official holiday. Republic Day marks the creation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. After Turkey’s victory in the War of Independence (1919-1923), the Turkish parliament proclaimed the new Turkish state as a republic. A new constitution, which the parliament adopted on October 29, 1923, replaced the constitution of the Ottoman Empire. The leader in the Turkish War of Independence, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, became the country’s first president on the same day. According to Atatürk, Republic Day is Turkey’s most important holiday.
