Ukraine in Arabic | The possible new sanctions of the EU against Russia
KYIV/Ukraine in Arabic/ The European Union should formulate specific “benchmarks” for Moscow to avoid a next round of sanctions or for the current sanctions to be lifted, the European Parliament’s resolution on the situation in Ukraine and the EU’s relations with Russia approved at a plenary session in Strasbourg on Thursday says.
The European Parliament has called on EU member states to cancel the planned conclusion of agreements with Russia in the energy sector, including the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline, as well as to disconnect the country's banks from the SWIFT international interbank system of information transfer and payments.
This is stated in a European Parliament resolution "On the situation in Ukraine and the state of play of EU-Russia relations"
The European legislators call on the European Council and member states "not to consider lifting any sanction before these conditions are met and to remain ready to impose further sanctions for any actions undertaken by Russia to undermine the ceasefire agreement or to further escalate the tensions in Ukraine."
Lawmakers also expressed confidence that the EU should consider excluding Russia from civil nuclear cooperation.
Deputies stressed the need for the EU to rethink its relations with Russia, abandon the strategic partnership concept and find a new, unified approach.
The resolution also welcomes the decision by the French government to halt the delivery of the Mistral helicopter carriers and calls on all member states to take a similar line regarding exports not covered by the EU sanctions decisions, in particular as regards arms and dual-use material.
