Pope Francis is expected in Turkey on Friday on his first visit to the predominantly Muslim country

KYIV/Ukraine in Arabic/ Pope Francis has begun his first visit to Turkey in a trip aimed at building bridges with Islam and supporting the Christian minorities of the Middle East.

On Friday, Francis will spend the first of three days in Turkey in the capital Ankara, notably holding a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at his newly constructed presidential palace.

Pope Francis travels to Turkey this weekend amid new Muslim-Christian tensions and war next door, with militants of Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seizing chunks of Iraq and Syria and sending 1.6 million refugees across the border into Turkey.
