KYIV/Ukraine in Arabic/ Participants in talks on the creation of a coalition in the Verkhovna Rada have initialed the text of the coalition agreement.
The parties that have formed the parliamentary coalition have agreed that a key foreign policy aim of Ukraine should be to join NATO, newly elected MP Yehor Sobolyev said in a posting on his Facebook page on Friday.
"Joining NATO is a goal for Ukraine. It is the last decision by the political forces of the new parliamentary majority, on which we have just agreed in parliament", he said.
As reported, according to the text that was previously published on the website of the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko, the coalition agreement foresees the development and adoption of the new wording of the national security strategy and military doctrine, taking into account changes in the military and political situation in Ukraine.
In addition, it is proposed to amend the laws of Ukraine on the foundations of domestic and foreign policy and on the foundations of national security, including "by envisaging the annulment of Ukraine's non-aligned status, the resumption of a political course toward integration into the Euro-Atlantic security space and membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and also the restoration of Ukraine's national sovereignty over the territory of Crimea as one of the strategic goals."
The representatives of five parties signed a coalition agreement on the night of November 21.
On November 19, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian Federation required an absolute guarantee that Ukraine would not join NATO. The next day, on November 20, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation made the official statement on the matter and demanded guarantees that Ukraine would not join the alliance after its rejection of the non-aligned status.
In turn, NATO said that Russia should respect the sovereign decisions of Ukraine.
