Ukraine in Arabic | Peace must be achieved but not through Ukraine’s surrender, Tusk says
KYIV/Ukraine in Arabic/ The former Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has taken over as President of the European Council. Upon taking office he said his priorities will be tackling the economic crisis, developing relations with the US and improving the security of Europe’s borders.
According to him, there are good reasons to believe that it is possible at least to limit the scale of the conflict in Ukraine.
"There are several reasons leading to the conclusion that the solution (to the conflict in Ukraine - ed.), which would ensure, at least, minimization of the crisis scale, is possible, and we will work on it," he said.
At the same time, according to Tusk, the peace in Ukraine cannot be achieved at the expense of Kyiv.
"All we want is peace and stability there, in the east, but it should not be the peace at the expense of Ukraine, at the expense of cession or surrender to the aggressive policy," the European Council president said.
He stressed that he has neither illusions nor 'negative obsessions' concerning the relationships with Russia.
Tusk also added that he didn't plan to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin so far.
