KYIV/Ukraine in Arabic/ A round table discussion on the problems of migrants in Ukraine was held in Odessa. The event was organized by The Shield International Congress for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms and Odessa’s National Union of Journalists.
Within the meeting the issues of migration amnesty or legalization of illegal immigrants, the participation of human rights and civil society organizations in the integration of refugees and migrants and the need for law reform in the field of migration were discussed.
The event was attended by representatives of the Public Prosecutor of Ukraine in Odessa region, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in Odessa, the President of The Shield Congress, the chairman of the board of Odessa’s National Union of Journalists, the deputy head of the International Committee for the Defense of Human Rights and the representatives of the International Union (IU), the Religious Administration of Ukrainian Muslims (DUMU), the Social Legal Aid, the Lawyer Plus (Yurist Plyus), as well, as members of the African, Kurdish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Dagestan and the Chechen communities in Ukraine, media and others.
For the first time in the history of independent Ukraine the non-governmental organization raised the issue of amnesty of illegal immigrants in Ukraine.
Round table organizers have considered the issue of amnesty migrants who, during a long time living in our state but, due to the circumstances can’t get a residence permit or a citizenship. The Shield Congress president Saleh Mohammad Dagher has proposed to promote the Government in the organization of this process.
The human rights organizations have pointed to the need to reform the current legislation of Ukraine in the field of migration policy, by adapting it to the European one.
Besides the issue of spiritual education of was raised also.
At the end of the meeting participants signed an appeal addressed to the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Rybak.
