The Rada began to increase penalties for car theft
The Verkhovna Rada proposes to take into account the value of the car when determining the responsibility for its theft. People's deputies approved the relevant bill відповід3301 in the first reading.
The current version of Part 2 and 3 of Art. 289 of the Criminal code takes into account actually caused losses from a crime, instead of cost of the stolen car.
The same draft law proposes to replace in the relevant provisions the words "caused significant material damage" to "committed in large amounts" and "committed in large amounts." Thus, the act determines the qualifying value of the car.
In particular, a significant amount is the amount of 100 to 250 non-taxable minimum incomes (from 105,100 to 262,750 hryvnias), and a large amount is more than 250 non-taxable minimum incomes (more than 262,750 hryvnias).
At the same time, theft of a car worth up to 105,000 hryvnias is subject to a fine of 1,000 to 1,200 non-taxable minimum incomes (17,000 hryvnias to 20,400 hryvnias) or restriction of liberty for a term of 3 to 5 years, or imprisonment for the same term.
For stealing a car worth more than 262 thousand hryvnias, they offer to imprison for a term of 7 to 12 years with or without confiscation of property.
The law also increases the liability for illegal modification, forgery, replacement or destruction of the identification number of a stolen car, its sale, as well as the creation or maintenance of places where such cars are converted. Such acts are punishable by a fine of 1,000 to 1,200 tax-free minimums, or restriction of liberty for a term of 3 to 5 years, or imprisonment for the same term.
