Every year on one of the Manhattan islands is held Festival of Indigenous in response to Columbus Day.
The most important event of the fest is the Pow-wow.
Pow-wow is a gathering of North American Indians. The name came from the language narragansett, from the word powwaw, meaning "spiritual leader".
Modern pau-wow is a specific event in which Americans and Indians are going to dance, sing, communicate, discuss Indian culture. On the pau-wah there are dance competitions, often with cash prizes. Pau-wah can last from several hours to three days, and the most important ‘Pow wow’ can last up to a week.
