Putin said Russia had agreed to reduce its military deployment in Syria The Syrian army announced a nationwide ceasefire and truce, which will begin at midnight on December 29, by local time. This step is aimed at a transfering the conflict into the political sphere and finally put an end to six years of war-torn country.
In a statement carried by Syrian state news agency SANA, the army said the ceasefire will begin at midnight on December 30 (9am Friday AEDT).
Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed opposition groups and the Syrian government had signed a number of documents, including a ceasefire deal.
He also said Russia had agreed to reduce its military deployment in Syria.
The deal excludes Islamic State, the group formerly known as the Nusra Front and all groups linked to them.
