Capital of Ukraine in TOP 50 of world’s most-surveilled cities
Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has ranked 49 in the list of the cities most surveilled by CCTV cameras. Comparitech researchers focused primarily on public CCTV—cameras used by government entities such as law enforcement. In Kyiv, there are 6,200 CCTV cameras per 2,950,819 people, that is, 2.16 cameras per 1,000 people. Crimea index in Kyiv stands at 47.23, while safety index – at 52.77.
The study revealed that eight out of the top 10 most-surveilled cities are in China. London and Atlanta were the only cities outside of China to make the TOP 10. At the same time, researchers found little correlation between the number of public CCTV cameras and crime or safety. Broadly speaking, more cameras does not necessarily result in people feeling safer.
