Prosecutor General's Office possess evidence that the coal from South Africa is of low quality and does not comply with the standards used by the Zmievska, Tripolska and Starobeshevo TPPs, which are operated by Centrenergo.

KYIV/Ukraine in Arabic/ Prosecutor General of Ukraine Vitaly Yarema said on Friday that the coal Ukraine imported from South Africa is of poor quality and won’t burn in Ukrainian thermal power plants

"Yesterday an order was issued for the director of Ukrinterenergo Volodymyr Zinevych to be brought before the courts. Today he is in hospital," Yarema said.

It is very common for Ukrainian officials who are charged with corruption to suddenly be taken ill.

Yarema said that the task of the Cabinet of Ministers is to provide the country with the high-quality coal.

"The coal that was imported from South Africa does not burn in our power plants. It is a crime and it must be punished. This person is charged with doing deliberate harm to our economy by spending UAH 384 million on importing coal not suitable for our TPPs," Yarema said.

He said the directors of Ukrinterenergo and Centrenergo were suspects in the case. The losses that the state has incurred as a result of the coal import contract are being estimated, he said.

According to Yarema, the Prosecutor General's Office possess evidence that the coal from South Africa is of low quality and does not comply with the standards used by the Zmievska, Tripolska and Starobeshevo TPPs, which are operated by Centrenergo.

Energoatom’s press service told that raids took place at the company's headquarters and its Atomremontservice, Atomkomplekt and Scientific and Technical Center divisions. Documents concerning Energoatom's cooperation with over 250 enterprises, including OJSC TVEL, Wеstіnghоusе Еlесtrіс Sweden АВ, KPMG Audit LLC, Grant Thornton Legis, etc, were seized by law enforcement.

The director of the external IT communications center at Energoatom, Ilona Zayats, said that the reason for the raids is a criminal investigation that opened in summer 2014, examining the company’s operation during 2012-2013.

She said that Prosecutor General's Office already conducted raids on September 9 and September 10, 2014, as part of the same investigation.

Zayats said that any decision made to proceed with the investigation was based on the documents seized during the first search.

The company said that the seizure of many contract and financial documents hinders the company not only in relation to its normal operation, but in its ability to combat corruption too.

Energoatom is the operator of all four nuclear power plants currently working in Ukraine: the Zaporizhia, Yuzhnoukrainsk, Rivne and Khmelnytsky power plants which contain 15 pressurized light water reactors and a total rated capacity of 13.835 gigawatts.
