Resources involved and human casualties made the Iran-Iraq war one of the largest military conflicts since the Second World War The Iran-Iraq war, or Sacred Defense, as it is called in the Islamic Republic, is the largest military conflict in the Middle East, which lasted from 1980 to 1988.
By the summer of 1982 Iran had returned the territories occupied by Iraq, after which the parties began a war of attrition. The truce that ended the war was signed on August 20, 1988 and restored the pre-war situation.
