Ukraine may receive lethal weapon from US in new year
Ukraine expects arms supplies, including lethal weapons, from the United States in 2019.
"We expect further assistance in boosting our defense capabilities. These are arms supplies, including lethal weapons. This is the possibility of procuring weapons in the U.S. We are better prepared for this. We expect, and this is a good signal from Ukraine – the president tabled a motion in parliament. Changes to legislation that will allow direct arms procurement are under consideration," Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly told the Chas-Time program of the Voice of America's Ukrainian Service.
"We are working together now. The Strategic Partnership Commission considers all issues, including military and technical cooperation, cooperation on security issues," he said.
The ambassador says Ukraine expects the continuation of U.S. sanctions policy against Russia. "And there will be work in that direction," he said.
In addition, according to Chaly, Ukraine expects the development of projects in the field of energy, energy security, as well as the strengthening of cyber defense cooperation this year. "These are the same priorities that we've had before, as the war goes on and nothing has changed, but increased interaction – very pragmatic, detailed interaction – is something that will be significant this year," he added.
