Ukraine in Arabic | Interpol refuses to put Yanukovich on wanted list

Prosecutor General's Office had provided all the necessary materials that should serve as a basis for placing these people on the international wanted list

KYIV/Ukraine in Arabic/ Interpol is refusing to put former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who was hiding in Russia, and six other former senior Ukrainian officials on the international wanted list.

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Vitaliy Yarema said this at a press conference on Monday.

"Seven people, led by Yanukovych, today were not declared wanted by Interpol... They [Interpol] said that they saw signs of political persecution in attempts to put Yanukovych on the wanted list," he said.

Two members of staff of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office were told at Interpol's headquarters in Lyon, France, that the organization saw elements of political persecution behind the criminal action against Yanukovych.

"We gave them examples, material, that there were economic crimes there as well. But even if you put Yanukovych aside, there's [former interior minister Vitaliy] Zakharchenko, [ex-prosecutor general Viktor] Pshonka – what political persecution can there be of those people?" Yarema said.

"Nevertheless, Interpol isn't putting them on its search list," he said.
