On July 25, 1957, the National Assembly abolished the monarchy and proclaimed Tunisia a republic headed by Habib Bourguiba. In the first years of independence, the positions of Pan-Arabism were strong in the ruling circles, and the leadership of the country seriously considered the idea of ​​creating the Arab Islamic Republic. Since the early 1960s, a de facto one-party regime was established in the country under the leadership of the Neo-Party, which was renamed the Socialist Dustov party in 1964.

In the general elections of November 1, 1981, all the seats in the parliament were given to the ruling Socialist Dustovian party, which is in a coalition with the General Tunisian Labor Association. This contributed to the consolidation and consolidation of the opposition's remaining seats.
